Welcome, humans.

I [Pete] am at the Nvidia conference this week and I have battle scars fighting off a bajillion other techies trying to get a selfie with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. And I still couldnā€™t get one.

Back to the gym...

Hereā€™s what you need to know about AI today:

  • Twitter helps us demystify GPTs at work.
  • Resources that teach you how to build your own GPTs.
  • We share a hot new tip for prompting chatbots.
  • A new AI startup makes new AI models by ā€œbreedingā€ them.

20 ways to use GPTs at work (feat. Lenny Rachitsky).

If you havenā€™t started using GPTs, you need to read this:

GPTs are custom versions of ChatGPT designed to do specific tasks, like write YouTube captions (see our pt. 1, pt. 2 & pt. 3 on GPTs).

Lenny Rachitsky crowdsourced 20 ways companies are already using GPTs to be more productive at workā€”here are a few of our faves:

  1. GPT that searches employee databases and answers Qā€™s like ā€œWho is the eng lead for Xā€.
  2. GPT that helps employees with goal setting using the SMART framework.
  3. GPT that generates takeaways from sales convos.
  4. GPT that simulates what different customers might say about a product.

If youā€™re new to this ā€œAI thingā€, go explore GPTs on OpenAIā€™s GPT Store and search for ones related to your workflows (weā€™ve been loving the Data Analyst GPT lately).

To create your own GPT:

  1. Read our guide.
  2. Read OpenAIā€™s guide.
  3. Get ChatGPT+.
  4. Watch this podcast with our pals Dan Shipper and Logan Kilpatrick

& Lenny says step #5 best here:

ā€œOnce you get the initial version set up, you can then upload ā€˜knowledgeā€™ā€”decks, PDFs, spreadsheets, and any other documents that give the GPT more information on your specific context and company. For example, you can upload your roadmap, your company values, your career ladders, etc. The more you give it, the better it does. Think of it like onboarding a personā€”what context would you want them to have to do their job well?ā€

Prompting tip: describe what ā€œgoodā€ looks like.

Lesson 8 of our Intro to ChatGPT course (free!) teaches the RACEF prompt framework: Role, Action, Context, Examples, Format.

Without the RACEF framework:

Write a one-line description of my business for my website

With the RACEF framework:

[role] Act as a world-class copywriter.
[action] Write a one-line description of my business that I can use on my website.
[context] I run a social media marketing agency for real estate agents, specifically focusing on TikTok and Instagram.
[examples] One example I like is ā€œSoftware that keeps you running while you keep the world running"

[format] Give it to me in a short list with no other explanation

Example output (Claude 3): ā€œElevating real estate agents' social media presence, one TikTok and Instagram post at a time.ā€

We can do better. Try adding a description of what a good output would be like:

Good headlines describe what the business does in a super creative way. They don't use buzzwords. They're short and consumable, while generating curiosity. They orient towards the business outcomes that customers would get.

New example output (Claude 3): "ā€˜For saleā€™ into ā€˜soldā€™ with a single scrollā€

Way better! Give it a shot with your next prompt and let us know how it went by replying to this email.

Around the Horn.

  • Bloomberg trained its own model, then found out just using out-of-the-box GPT-4 was better.
  • AI-generated conspiracy theory videos are flooding TikTok.
  • Cohere is looking for a $5B valuation in a new funding round, with just $22M in annualized revenue.
  • Sakana AI announced a new way of making AI models thatā€™s based on evolution and natural selection.
  • Scammers are using AI to steal peopleā€™s tax refunds.

Thursday Trivia.

Pizza Hut Taiwan created a Halloween pizza that creeped us out.

One glance, everyone knows the rules: one of these product ads is AI-generated and the other one is real. Which is which?
