Making Cents of OpenAI's Prices 💰

Last week, OpenAI released the long-awaited ChatGPT API. Hackers were so excited that we threw a hackathon just 4 days later.

But hacker energy buried a big point: the ChatGPT API is also 90% cheaper.

That follows a 67% drop in September 2022. In total, using GPT is now ~97% cheaper than it was just 6 months ago.

So what gives? We think OpenAI is trying to strangle its fellow startup competitors:

  • Anthropic is priming the world for Claude, its ChatGPT competitor.
  • And Stability AI's open-source strategy is a constant threat to OpenAI's revenue.

Why not drop prices to near-free before competitors can get to the start line? (That includes the other, unannounced competitors that we're hearing in our DMs.)

Where's the bag? Microsoft's complicated investment with OpenAI requires OpenAI to generate many tens of billions of profit before it starts making money. That doesn't come easy when you're making pennies at a time.

Fun fact: OpenAI's Whisper API (speech to text) is $0.006/minute. You could transcribe an entire year of your life for $3,145.

AI Terrifies Steven Spielberg

Jaws. Indian Jones. Jurassic Park. Schindler's List. E.T.

Your favorite Steven Spielberg masterpieces have created a legacy unlike any other in the film industry. But now, with AI, art is changing for good ... and it absolutely "terrifies" the directing legend.

Models like ChatGPT can produce creative scripts indistinguishable from human craft. Coupled with generative art and language dubbing, it's set to gobble up production like a shark.

  • The wave is already here: Last month, Netflix used an AI art generator to design background art for its short anime film The Dog & The Boy.
  • And Jen Hollingsworth, an experienced entertainment exec, is heading to AI firm Flawless to help grow its transformative visual dubbing tech that creates lip-syncs in any language.

To be fair, Spielberg professed his appreciation for digital tools in taking art to the next level but is wary of computers replacing what the human soul has to offer:

"The soul is unimaginable and is ineffable. And it cannot be created by any algorithm."

Hey ChatGPT, pretend you're Steven Spielberg and write me a script for the next blockbuster cat movie!

Smarter Than a Robot? 🤖

We actually prompted ChatGPT to write an opening for the next blockbuster cat movie. Then we dug up a screenplay for a cat story that *already exists*.

Can you tell which script is AI-generated?

Opening Scene:

FADE IN:

EXT. NEW YORK CITY - DAY

We see a group of five cats walking down a busy street in New York City. They are dressed in superhero costumes and each has a unique power: there's Fluffy, who can turn invisible; Whiskers, who can teleport; Scratch, who has super strength; Mittens, who can fly; and Boots, who has the power of telekinesis.

Opening Scene:

FADE IN:

EXT. THE CONTRESSA'S PALACE - NIGHT

We see a beautiful old house with a large garden, surrounded by high walls. The moon is shining bright in the sky. The camera moves closer and we see a silhouette of a cat sitting on top of the wall, looking down into the garden.
