ChatGPT’s Code Interpreter Makes Waves 🔢
Understanding data may be the #1 skill in business, and you may no longer need to know code to do it.
Once OpenAI figured out ChatGPT could write code to do the things it couldn’t normally do, they turned it into a plugin called code interpreter.
And people are saying code interpreter rivals junior-level data anlysts.
Just upload a CSV file, and voilà! The interpreter not only provides suggestions for visualizations and analyses, but it actually does them!
For example, in typical tech fashion, one person uploaded a CSV of San Francisco crime data and successfully generated…
- Bar charts over time.
- Heatmaps of distribution.
- Scatterplots of incidents.
…all with simple prompts. Other tinkerers have shared their experiences using the plugin to extract colors from an image, visualize population data, and even create GIFs!
The best part is that you can customize the outputs with follow-up prompts, such as “make the chart lines orange and green, like The Neuron.”
Data scientists both rejoice and cringe:
- Hot: The last wave of data products tried to empower non-technical teams to analyze their own data. That still required them to learn SQL. Maybe now that dream finally comes true?
- Not: Those teams still need to know how to ask the right questions. Data tools + bad questions = meaningless results.
To try it, you need to have signed up for the ChatGPT Plugins waitlist.

ChatGPT Takes Its First Victim 📉
Chegg saw its stock get cut in half after warning that ChatGPT might have contributed to sluggish user growth this quarter. Yikes!
The publicly traded ed-tech company provides homework answers, textbooks, and tutoring to high and college students. (yes, it’s a massive cheating scheme.)
However, these days it’s ChatGPT, not Chegg, open on every laptop in libraries.
Now, facing threats to its entire business, Chegg is racing to adopt AI before its services become obsolete.
- The company recently announced CheggMate, a ChatGPT-powered learning tool designed to answer questions quicker.
- But, like the market, we’re skeptical of the vision that services built on top of ChatGPT can save Chegg from CheckMate.
Why it matters: The next six months will be crucial for many established companies to prove that their businesses are differentiated enough (relative to ChatGPT) to retain customers.
In the game of AI, you either disrupt yourself or get disrupted. There is no middle ground.
