Top Law Firm Hires AI Chatbot 📟
The legal industry just made a surprisingly bold move.
According to the Financial Times, Allen & Overy, a top London law firm, has enlisted an AI chatbot named 'Harvey' to optimize its contract drafting process.
Harvey is one of OpenAI's first startup investments.
It's a major win for generative AI. Law firms are notorious for being slow to adopt new technology, let alone such a well-known brand buying from such a young startup. Harvey must have blown them away.
Still, the firm is adamant that Harvey is not so much a job-stealer as it is a job assistant.
“It’s not cutting out anyone, it’s not a cost-cutting exercise, it’s a nice smart way of working. It’s saving time at all levels.”
David Wakeling, head of Allen & Overy's markets innovation group
- Harvey disclaims that legal supervision is still necessary when employing the chatbot. In other words, take everything Harvey outputs with a grain of salt.
Zoom out: Although Harvey's abilities may only extend to creating initial drafts, the move could signify a larger transition within the legal profession of using AI to streamline operations.
And if AI Harvey is anywhere near as talented as Harvey Specter from Suits ... well ... let's just say watch out 👀
You.com Has Words For Google
Despite Microsoft and Google hogging the public spotlight, a lesser-known search startup has been quietly developing its AI capacities: You.
Not you, the reader, but You.com, the "anti-Google" search engine competitor that raised $25 million last summer. According to its founder Richard Socher, the search engine laps incumbents in AI search.
He's referring to You's new 'multimodal search,' which goes beyond text in its answers: tables, graphs, code, and images.
- For instance, an input of "What is Salesforce's stock price?" would result in a chart instead of the top link or text-based answer.
- The company is growing by double-digit monthly percentages and garners millions of users daily.
Bottom line: In the race to redefine search, innovation is going to come from all directions, not just our Big Tech buddies.
Smarter Than a Robot? 🤖
Speaking of laws and robots, here are the first two of the Three Laws of Robotics:
- A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
- A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
After much wrestling with ChatGPT (curse you, new content policies!), we finally convinced it to write a fake third law. Which one is real, and which one is ChatGPT's fake?
3A/ A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
3B/ A robot must strive to improve the well-being and happiness of humanity, even if doing so conflicts with the First or Second Law.
