Amazon Announces Generative AI Services 🌈

After not a single word about AI this entire time, Amazon has finally entered the AI chat.

The everything store just announced its AI service 'Bedrock,' which makes foundational models available for AWS clients via an API.

  • Clients can select from various cutting-edge models by AI21 Labs, Anthropic, and Stability AI.
  • Amazon also announced its own models called Titan that summarize and translate text inputs. However, little is known about their size and training data.

For enterprises, the beauty lies in fine-tuning the models. In other words, starting with a model like Anthropic Claude and feeding it a tad more data to customize it to the business. Basically, it's like the foam topper on a mattress.

Amazon's AI strategy is focusing on businesses first. Bedrock is currently building a waitlist and faces competition from OpenAI, Microsoft, Scale AI and NVIDIA.

Why it matters: It's Amazon's biggest AI push yet, and a big bet that businesses want access to customizable models that don't cost billions to develop.

4/5 of FAAMG has entered AI in a big way. Hello, Apple? Can I speak to Tim Cook please?

Stable Diffusion Gets An Upgrade 🧲️

Inspired by the Super Mario movie, Stability AI just gave its generative art tool a mushroom power-up. New model 'SDXL' is out in beta today (click here to access).

According to Stability AI, the upgrade is a big one, with massive improvements in graphic design and architecture:

SDXL challenges Midjourney as the go-to for AI images. Its abilities include image-to-image prompting and reconstructing and extending images.

Most importantly, it can finally draw hands. If you've ever played with AI art, you'd think a hand has three fingers. The new model is mostly good at drawing all five.

SDXL follows the company's open-source approach. This means people will be able to build stuff on top of the model, unlike Midjourney, which does not have an API yet.

This might just be the spark Stability AI needs to meet its target $4 billion valuation.

Friday Fun Fact 🔏

The first AI chatbot, ELIZA, was created by Joseph Weizenbaum in 1964 at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

It used a pattern recognition technique that created the illusion of understanding. Even so, the chatbot built emotional connections with some of its users.

Don't know what's more shocking: an AI or therapy happening in the '60s?!
