Welcome, humans.

Want to watch a particular event at the 2024 Paris Olympics? Just use this ā€œ2024 Paris Gamesā€ GPT. It can answer when any event/athlete is airing, plus when itā€™s happening in your time zone so you donā€™t accidentally miss an important eventā€”say, IDK, the last ever meeting between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadalā€”like Noah did yesterday.

P.S.: The ad agency we work with is hiring for a new position! If youā€™re a full stack web design engineer who wants to develop apps and tools for newsletters like The Neuron, click here to apply.

Hereā€™s what you need to know about AI today:

  • Apple released its anticipated iPhone AI tools for developers.
  • FCC proposed new rules for AI disclosures in political TV/radio ads.
  • HuggingFace will now offer ā€œinference as a serviceā€ powered by NVIDIA.
  • New study found attempts to get AI to "unlearn" degrades model performance.

Apple Intelligence is outā€¦for developers, anyway.

Remember the excitement of snooping for presents as a kid, only to have to wait 24 hours before opening them?

That's what Apple just did with its ā€œpreviewā€ release of Apple Intelligence on iOS 18.1. The AI tools are here, but only for devs, and only partially.

Oh yeah, and if youā€™re a regular user, you have to wait until October to get them.

If youā€™re a dev, hereā€™s whatā€™s available today:

  • Writing suggestions, like proofread, rewrite, and tone adjustments (e.g.,ā€friendlyā€, ā€œprofessionalā€, or ā€œcasualā€).
  • AI summaries for email, texts, and voicemails.
  • Enhanced photo search and movie creation.
  • Improved, glowy Siri with troubleshooting advice and better listening.

Hereā€™s what this actually looks like in practice:

Devs can sign up for the waitlist here, but there's a second waitlist for the AI tools. Fortunately, the onboarding process is reportedly pretty fast (unlike OpenAIā€™s SearchGPT waitlist).

What's not ready yet:

  • Image and emoji generation (ā€œgenmojisā€ as Apple calls them).
  • Object removal from photos.
  • ChatGPT integration.
  • Siri's ability to use personal info and act within apps.

Those last two features are crucialā€”Allowing an AI to take actions inside iPhone apps is the unlock that could completely change the way we interact with our devicesā€”imagine telling Siri to order you an Uber home and it does it without you having to click on the app.

Hopefully, these features will roll out soon, even if the full update isn't ready by October. In the meantime, weā€™ll be compulsively clicking refresh on YouTube for when MKBHDā€™s review of Apple Intelligence dropsā€¦

P.S. Interestingly, Apple trained these new AI models on Google's TPU chipsā€”not Nvidiaā€™s.

Around the Horn.

  • Metaā€™s new AI studio lets influencers create AI versions of themselves on Instagram.
  • The FCC proposed a new rule to mandate disclosures if AI content is used in political ads on TV and radio.
  • A new study found that trying to get AI to ā€œunlearnā€ undesirable training data hurts the modelā€™s overall performance.
  • Huggingface will now offer ā€œinference as a serviceā€ powered by NVIDIA, so you can query open-source models like you would ChatGPT.

Treats To Try.

Tuesday Ticker

Here are the results from last weekā€™s poll:

  • A.K. chose Open-source availability: ā€œNot for my own use specifically, but for those smart enough to pick it apart and build upon it. Then we will start to see some really cool custom applications with the model in mind!ā€
  • E.M. chose AI integration across apps: ā€œTo be able to use Meta on an Instagram platform. It would greatly enhance my marketing ability.ā€ Ā
  • S.H. chose None of the above: ā€œNot my choice, I live in Europe šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļøā€
