Welcome, humans.
It’s here. Hollywood wants rights to AI clones of actors…forever. It straight up sounds like the premier of the latest Black Mirror Season, “Joan Is Awful.”
Here’s what’s going on in the world of AI today:
- OpenAI is forming partnerships to access proprietary data.
- Bard now supports text-to-speech and image prompting.
- Meta is releasing LLaMA commercially soon.
- The FTC is investigating OpenAI for harming consumers.

Inside OpenAI’s Search For New Data 🥜
Midjourney’s interpretation of this story…
AI models need tons of data. It’s like gasoline for a car.
This is why OpenAI has feasted on the entire internet — the more it learns, the sharper its answers.
But what happens once OpenAI turns smarter than the internet itself?
A tempting strategy was to “borrow” data from content-rich playgrounds like Twitter and Reddit. But those firms quickly wised up and said, “Nuh-uh. Pay up.”
Now, OpenAI is courting individual companies for their data. Just this week, it forged one-to-one partnerships with:
- The Associated Press, tapping into its news archives dating back to 1985.
- Shutterstock, accessing its repository of images, videos, music and metadata.
In return, these sites will enjoy “priority access” to OpenAI’s latest technology.
Why it matters: Niche data like Reddit forums or Shutterstock images can help AI models get just a little bit better. The race to create the best models might increasingly become a contest who can afford the most “new” data.

Bard Is Getting Better … BUT It’s Still Not Great 📈📉
ChatGPT is 16x more popular than Bard by web traffic. Why?
It’s simply better at almost everything: writing, coding, & reasoning.
The only time Bard seems to take the lead is when it comes to current events, like “summarize the latest AI regulation.”
Yesterday, though, Bard announced some intriguing new features:
- you can listen to responses (in 40+ languages).
- ability to export code to Replit.
- use images in prompts.
Here’s our take: Bard still isn’t giving nearly as good of responses as ChatGPT-4. Bard needs to get better + fully integrate with Google Workspace apps like Docs and Gmail. Then we’ll talk.
For now, Bard's relationship with ChatGPT mirrors that of Scottie Pippen to Michael Jordan — forever overshadowed.
