Elon's Public Warning About AI 😱
In 2014, Elon warned us of a looming peril: "With artificial intelligence, we are summoning the demon."
Nearly 10 years later, he's once again sounding the alarm bell, slamming Microsoft and OpenAI for their rigid, opaque, and outright destructive policies.
For context:
- In 2015, Elon Musk co-founded OpenAI in December 2015 as a non-profit AI research company.
- But in 2018, Elon left OpenAI's board, citing the company's unintended transition from non-profit to for-profit as the reason for his exit.
But it's not just the flip-flop. Elon has lambasted OpenAI's alleged political bias, which he says favors certain political and cultural groups.
A graver concern for Musk is Bing's lunatic outputs to specific prompts as of late, which he says sound "eerily like the AI in System Shock that goes haywire & kills everyone."
Bottom line: Right or wrong, Elon's observations bring to light the potentially bleak future that AI models might usher in.
Maybe he'll dish out another check to buy back the company in full.
AI Is Racing Past Us 🏎
If you think racing against your friends is hard enough, try an AI.
Sony AI and Polyphony Digital are releasing a 'hyper-realistic' AI racing competitor called 'GT Sophy' for Gran Turismo, a racing video game.
While hardly new to racing, AI systems have been hampered in the past by their adherence to strict trajectories (think passive driver).
Now they're hitting the gas pedal:
- They aim to "train an AI agent that could race against the best players in the world and beat them."
- GT Sophy was trained on a neural network for two years and learns quickly through reinforcement training (i.e., hours behind the wheel).
Watch out: With how things are trending, GT Sophy will speed past us in no time. Crossing my fingers that my supremacy in Mario Kart will continue for at least a few more years.
