Google, OpenAI Have No Competitive Edge, Says Researcher 🙀

A Google researcher has leaked an internal document arguing that neither OpenAI nor Google will win the AI race. Instead, it’ll be open-source models.

If that doesn’t sound crazy, let us explain. Google and OpenAI develop language models like GPT-4. But the models are hush-hush - keep ‘em private, make lots of money.

Recently, open-source models have been closing the gap at an impressive pace. Since Meta’s open-source model LLaMA was leaked in March, ordinary devs have built:

• Models that run on your phone in seconds.
• A lightweight version of LLaMA that runs in an hour.
• A ChatGPT-quality model for just $100.

All in a mere two months.

The researcher behind the memo predicts a surge in faster, more customizable open-source models that will render OpenAI irrelevant, much like Stable Diffusion did with DALL-E.

Why it matters: Although the claim might be a stretch, its implications are difficult to ignore.

If accurate, this bodes well for consumers and the ecosystem. More choice, less strangehold by OpenAI.

But it’s bad news for Google, OpenAI, and other proprietary-preaching businesses keeping research to themselves. Sharing is caring and (maybe) profit-bearing!

Pi, Your Everything Assistant For Life? 🥧

Men would literally rather build an AI therapist than go to therapy.

We’re talking about Pi, of course, Inflection’s new personal AI that “really gets you.”

The launch on Monday had most of us confused. LinkedIn and Google DeepMind co-founders raise $225 million, and the best they could do was another GPT spinoff that makes you feel good?

Upon second glance, there might be more to Pi than meets the eye. 🎶

After trawling through their blog posts and job descriptions alongside Allie Miller, it looks like Inflection is building AI that is custom to each and every person. Your Pi and my Pi may not be the same.

That seems like the type of swing this company should be taking. The infrastructure required to customize 7 billion different AI models would be insane.

Over time we’ll get a better sense of what Pi can do. For now, fringe developers will work their hardest to ‘jailbreak’ the chatbot.

As for us? We’re headed back to therapy.
