Here’s what’s going on in the world of AI today:

  • Google rushes to build AI search 🏃
  • Elon creates OpenAI Rival "X" 🌪
  • ChatGPT diagnoses (some) patients 🥼
  • AI agents that run locally 🖥

Google Scrambles To Integrate AI Into Search 🔎

Google is racing scrambling to integrate chat-based AI features into Google Search as AI-powered search threatens its core business.

What's the rush? Well, Google recently learned that Samsung is weighing the possibility of choosing Microsoft's Bing as its default search engine. That's a $3 billion contract at stake.

This marks the first real threat to Google Search's monopoly since, well, ever. As expected, it threw the company into full "panic" mode.

Now, the behemoth is rushing to release "Magi", a set of new features that would ChatGPT-ify Google Search:

  • The chatbot would, of course, be able to converse with users, all within the core Google search experience. And no: ads aren't going anywhere.
  • The most prominent upgrade would be a coding assistant that could answer questions and write code based on a prompt.

Google has a special team of 160 people building Magi and hopes to release it to 30 million consumers by year's end. But will that be enough?

Bottom line: Google has stumbled into the AI party late and drunk, as demonstrated by the rocky launch of Bard. The next 3-6 months will be crucial for Google as it tries to reassert its dominance.

Elon Musk Launches OpenAI Rival Called "X"

The rumors are true: Elon Musk is launching an OpenAI rival called X.AI.

For context, Musk co-founded OpenAI back in 2015 but stepped down in 2018 due to differing opinions. He's since ridiculed OpenAI's transition to a for-profit, for being closed-source, and (ironically) for moving too quickly.

Little is known about the new lab except that it issued 100 million shares and is incorporated in Nevada.

We've learned never to doubt Elon, but we have so many questions about X:

  • How will it catch up to OpenAI if it's developing its own models?
  • Will the lab be open-source?
  • Will X be monetized as a for-profit (something Elon has been critical of)?

The name "X" also teases a potential collab with Twitter, which Elon recently renamed to X Corp.

Why it matters: X is entering a fast-moving and crowded market. We don't know what comes next, but expect more details to emerge soon via drunk Elon tweets.

Also: Elon named one of his kids X. Does this mean he'll abandon the project once it's born?

Around the Horn 🦄

  • An AI-powered collab between Drake and The Weekend is going viral on social media and streaming platforms.
  • Both Joe Rogan and Drake took to social media to express their thoughts about AI deepfakes of themselves.
  • Sam Altman said that OpenAI is not training GPT-5 yet and 'won't for some time.'
  • Here's what an ER doctor found using ChatGPT to diagnose his patients.
  • A Goldman Sachs executive said the bank could build its own chatbot to help employees answer questions.
  • The European Parliament is developing stricter regulations around AI, including requiring chatbot developers to disclose when they use copyrighted content.
