Stanford Releases AI Temp Check 🌡

Stanford released its 2023 AI Index showcasing the most notable achievements, advances, and trends in the AI industry.

The full report is 386 pages (pshhh), which is something only an AI could read. We dug through it to find you the goodies:

1/ AI models are getting big fast. Models get millions times more training data than a decade ago. Moore's Law lives on!

They're also far more capable than they were in 2021, with improvements in technical performance benchmarks across image, video, and language assessments.

2/ But they're also more expensive. GPT-2 (2019) cost an estimated $50,000 to train, while PaLM (2022) cost $8 million. Developing LLMs has become a game of resources.

3/ More businesses are adopting AI, with the % of companies implementing AI more than doubling since 2017. Firms that have integrated AI reported lower costs and higher revenue.

4/ Copilot is making people more productive. 88% of Github's Copilot users report increased productivity, and 74% say they can focus more on satisfying work.

5/ AI job postings are rising across every sector. Plus, way more new AI PhDs are choosing to work in the private sector (65%) versus academia (28%) or government (1%). Money talks.

AI had a tremendous year in 2022, but with great power comes great responsibility. Amid progress has arisn a number of challenges like AI-powered deepfakes and security breaches.

Bottom line: AI's progress will only accelerate in 2023, but so will policymakers' growing interest in regulation.

ChatGPT In School: Good Or Bad? 🧑‍🏫

AI's role in education is a hot topic, and educator opinions are landing all across the spectrum.

Some view AI primarily as a weapon for cheating and misinformation. I can vouch for the former as a student myself, though I'm not pointing any fingers...

  • This has led many schools (and cities) to outright ban chatbots inside their walls.
  • But these efforts might be futile: Students can still use AI at home, and Turnitin's new AI detector, while mostly accurate, sometimes reports false positives.

Even Turnitin execs admitted that banning AI makes about as much sense as trying to prohibit calculators in the long run.

That's why some schools are actually promoting AI usage in the classroom.

  • Khan Lab School in Silicon Valley introduced a tool called Khanmigo that acts as a chatbot tutor if students have questions.
  • It also reminds students that teachers can see what they write into the chatbot!

Why it matters: Like calculators, AI has its challenges, but it can also be an asset in schools for students if used correctly.

Around the Horn 🦄

  • Check out this robot dog that can play soccer on grass, mud, and sand (TechCrunch).
  • Italy's Deputy Prime Minister thinks its temporary ban on ChatGPT is "excessive".
  • A piece on how AI is helping prevent fraud in ecommerce (VentureBeat).
  • This research paper focuses on how to leverage psychotherapy to control for harmful behaviors in AI chatbots.
