Analyze your data, create charts, and edit spreadsheets directly within ChatGPT-4o.

If your head was underwater last week amidst the AI craziness (don’t blame ya), you might’ve missed a big announcement from OpenAI that could make using Excel slightly less miserable.

TLDR: You’ll be able to edit spreadsheets, tables, and charts directly in ChatGPT-4o by simply prompting it what to do.

And yes, this means that ChatGPT will support interactions with files directly from GDrive and Microsoft OneDrive.

Previously, you had to download an Excel file → convert it to CSV → upload to ChatGPT → ChatGPT would make edits → download the edited CSV to reopen it. Yawn.

In layman’s terms: upload an Excel or GSheet to ChatGPT, and it’ll serve as a data intern that can deliver analyses on the fly.

So what can you actually do with this? Well, just about any type of basic analysis data you’d assign an intern:

Analyzing vast datasets to pinpoint trends, crucial stats, results, and more.
Editing spreadsheets—combining datasets, cleaning data, creating pivot tables.
Generating, editing, and customizing any type of chart.
Preparing financial statements like balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports.

Just upload a file, click “Expand View,” and start directing. This feature will roll out to Plus, Team, and Enterprise users in the coming weeks.

It’s pretty impressive. We have access and can verify it’s way better and faster than the previous data analyst. It’s not flawless, so always double-check important figures in charts or tables, but it excels at basic spreadsheet modifications and uncovering insights about data.

Microsoft and Google have been teasing similar features that’ll appear natively inside Excel/GSheet, but ChatGPT-4o is your go-to in the meantime.
