Welcome, humans.

Apple’s new headset was all the rage yesterday. It looks dope but gives major Black Mirror vibes. 🪞

Here’s what’s going on in the world of AI today:

  • OpenAI released guides on best practices using ChatGPT.
  • Apple leaned into the metaverse, not AI, at its dev conference.
  • Over half of marketers are using AI at work.
  • The Neuron audience is using AI for ~25% of work tasks.

How To Use ChatGPT Better 🚄

Ahhh, prompt engineering. The sexy skill everyone thinks they’ve mastered. “I’m a prompt engineer.” No, you feed info to a chatbot.

Jokes aside, prompt engineering can be quite helpful. Yesterday, OpenAI published a “GPT best practices” guide for enhancing the performance of ChatGPT.

When the inventors of something tell you how to use it, we listen.

The biggest point is the more detailed the prompt, the better the output. This involves:

  • specifying the steps required to complete a task.
  • being very specific with your prompts.
  • providing reference text
  • giving examples.

For more complex assignments, work with ChatGPT to formulate a solution.

Split up multi-step assignments into smaller subtasks and give ChatGPT time to reason through the problem itself.

For instance, when drafting a report using ChatGPT, tackle it section by section versus generating an entire draft that you can revise.

Why it matters: Even though ChatGPT is a robot, treating it like a first-day intern is the most effective way to have it work through assignments. It’s AI and not AGI for a reason…

Apple's Dev Conference: Metaverse is In, AI is Out 🥽

Doesn’t Apple know that AI is in and the metaverse is out?

At their big WWDC conference, Apple's big announcement centered around its new AR headset, “Vision Pro,” for a hefty $3,499. You might as well buy 3 ad slots in The Neuron for that!

Notably, AI was mostly missing from the presentation, with zero total mentions. Zero!

To be fair, language models did play a part in some new developments, like an improved autocorrect trained on your typing patterns. They just didn’t say “AI”, opting for phrases like “on-device machine learning” instead.

Maybe we’re too deep in the AI hole, but the lack of AI stood out in light of Google and Microsoft’s ambitious AI announcements!

No hype or no plan?

Either Apple is slow to roll out AI, or it’s simply prioritizing what it’s good at: hardware. Vision Pro seems like an “all hands on deck” type of effort, so we think it’s the latter.

We expect a totally Apple move: don’t release anything with crazy AI stuff, then come out swinging 9-12 months after we’ve stopped talking about them.

Around the Horn 🦄

  • A Salesforce report found that 51% of marketers are using generative AI at work, with the most popular use case being content and copy creation.
  • A top IMF official sees imminent “substantial disruptions in labor markets” from generative AI.
  • ETF providers are plowing money into generative AI companies and seeing big inflows in 2023.

Treats To Try 🍿

  • HuggingChat, HuggingFace's fully open-source alternative to ChatGPT, released a web search feature.
  • Reel uses AI to send personalized outreach messages on LinkedIn to boost job application response rates.

Tuesday Ticker ⏰

Here are the poll results from last week:

This survey probably self-selects, but still: WOW. The % of tasks completed using AI seems to settle around 25-30%, which is consistent with what we’ve been hearing.

This week’s poll is for us!

We’ve been sending this poll 5 times a week for 5 months. Is it too much? Too little? Just right? Be sure to comment why!

How many days a week should we publish The Neuron (in its current format)?

Quick reminder: you can enter our GPT-4 giveaway by referring just one reader to The Neuron (or more, to increase your chances of winning)!
