Big Tech Races To Revive Voice Assistants ☎️

When I asked Siri how to purchase an Alexa, it replied, “You dirty little cheater,” before blowing up in my hands.

Perhaps we’re exaggerating, but it’s true that voice assistants have failed to improve in quality over the years (in part due to being trained on finite Q&A data.).

Now Big Tech companies are rushing to revamp their voice assistants amid the arrival of powerful language models that can answer complex questions.

Amazon announced during its Q1 earnings that it’s working toward a far more capable LLM to power Alexa so it can answer questions beyond weather forecasts.
Apple is reportedly working on something similar for Siri.

If executed correctly, the future of smart home devices could fulfill the industry’s original vision for an assistant that can answer anything no matter how complex.

Still, we’re skeptical. For one, building a generalized language model across so many domains is no easy task. Plus, Big Tech has been plagued by miscalculations in this area over the years.

Satya Nadella even said this:

“Whether it’s Cortana or Alexa or Google Assistant or Siri, all these just don’t work.”

Looking forward: Whoever integrates language models best into hardware will capture the market. We think a ChatGPT + Whisper + Microsoft hardware collab could be the winning combo.

ChatGPT Defeated Physicians In Answering Patients ⚕️

Writing emails using AI is cool, but have you tried using it to save lives?

Last week, a research study showed that ChatGPT was preferred 79% of the time over physicians at responding to patient questions.

Notably, the chatbot was rated significantly more empathetic and conversational than the competing physicians, contrasting the widespread belief that AI “can’t talk like humans.”

The study is the latest in a movement to streamline the massively complex process of addressing medical inquiries in the healthcare industry.

Healthcare centers at UC San Diego and UW have already begun integrating GPT to extract critical patient history and draft replies to online inquiries.
So far, they’ve avoided letting AI handle inquiries completely alone to ensure accurate replies.

Why it matters: The ability of AI to synthesize enormous datasets could be a massive time-saver for healthcare providers. Fingers crossed that GPT doesn’t start imitating corny doctor jokes.
