Snapchat's AI Chatbot Goes Viral 👻

Listen up, parents: things are about to get crazy for your kids.

Snapchat just opened up access to its AI chatbot for its 750 million users. The GPT-powered AI includes a friendly companion, group chat assistant, and generative art maker.

We talked to our middle schooler cousins to get the inside scoop. Spoiler: it's nuts.

The chatbot sounds scarily like a real person. It's like ChatGPT with a personality: it can suggest fun activities, wish people happy birthday, and even provide therapy.

But like any kid, it's still learning. The internet is up in arms about ChatGPT's, ummm, creepiness... "My AI" has been caught gaslighting users, lying about having your location, and even giving sex advice to tweens.

Most importantly, it's really addicting. Premium users (i.e., kids) have already been sending 2 million messages a day to their chatbots.

  • Now it's coming to every kid with an iPhone, which makes us wonder: will the future of socialization be defined by invisible friends that immediately reply and never leave us on read?
  • With other "friendly convo" chatbots like Replika and Character also seeing mindboggling usage numbers, the answer might just be "yes".

Why it matters: Snap is just the beginning. Soon, AI will come to iMessage and every other communication platform. Today your friends help you draft texts; next year, it'll be a robot.

Introducing AI: Atlassian Intelligence 🧑‍💻

Atlassian makes some of the most ubiquitous office software in Jira and Confluence.

And they just put AI all over its products via Atlassian Intelligence.

It's an AI-powered teammate wherever you need it:

  • Writing tickets in Jira or meeting notes in Confluence
  • Requesting access to Figma on your first day
  • Remembering the upcoming product launch comms schedule

Just ping the chatbot in-product or on Teams/Slack.

Our favorite: Right-click to explain internal jargon. We know what it feels like to trawl through endless archives of internal wiki pages for hours. This is huge.

Bottom line: AI continues to percolate through your favorite software tools. At this point, if a company hasn't announced AI, you have to ask: what's taking ya so long?

(To our friends from Atlassian reading this - congrats on the launch!)

Around the Horn 🦄

  • Stability AI released its latest open-source language model called StableLM, a small and efficient model that can be used for commercial and research purposes.
  • Liam Gallagher commented on an AI-powered version of his Oasis album.
  • An interesting thread on how TurnItIn's "98% accurate" detection software will make schools "a living hell."
  • The AI clone song of Drake and The Weeknd was removed from Apple Music, Spotify, and other streaming platforms.
  • Elon Musk threatens to sue Microsoft for using Twitter's data to train its AI models. Microsoft is clapping back, removing Twitter from its advertising network.
  • The battle between voice actors and AI voices copying their speech and tones.
  • Google employees have criticized the company's rushed launch of Bard.
  • Snap introduced its new pair of augmented reality lenses powered by AI.

Treats To Try 🍿

  • Dover's AI recruiting assistant can pull any information on your candidates in Slack.
  • Try out Auto-GPT, an experiment to make GPT-4 autonomous, on Hugging Face.
  • Magic Slides makes presentations for you based on information you feed it.
  • Check out this game that asks you if you're talking to a human or AI (Human or not?).
  • Checksum helps automate your website based on user sessions by maintaining end-to-end tests.
