PLUS: ChatGPT beat a speeding ticket...

Welcome, humans.

Prediction: the next hit Superbowl ad will be AI-generated. Just look at this spec ad for Porsche that Redditors think could be an actual commercial:

Speaking of Porsches, someone was able to use ChatGPT to get a speeding ticket dismissed based on a technicality—GPT spotted the ticket cited the wrong letter in the statute (whatever that means).

Point is, the Redditor shared GPT’s find with a legal expert, who had used the same trick years ago, and it worked. MatlockGPT, anyone?

But seriously, don’t hire GPT as your lawyer
 at least not in Australia!

Here’s what you need to know about AI today:

  • We share 10 things you didn’t know you could do with Perplexity.
  • OpenAI study found ChatGPT is mostly fair across different names.
  • Adobe showcased experimental AI tools for 3D, animation, and editing.
  • CharacterAI users created unauthorized bots of real people.

10 things you didn’t know you could do with Perplexity.

Perplexity is trending right now—in more ways than one.

First, the company launched “Perplexity Finance” (we’ll dive into the details in a sec):

Second, Perplexity was sent a “cease and desist” from The New York Times that demanded the company stop using its content.

Perplexity says it’s not using NYT content to train its AI. Instead, it says what it does is index web pages to surface “factual content as citations” to answer questions (like Google).

In actuality, Perplexity does a lot more than that. Here’s 10 examples:

Example of #2 from below in action.

  1. Track stocks: Enter any stock ticker (or “[Company] stock”) and it will generate an interactive chart. Here’s an example with Tesla.
  2. Switch up your search: In addition to web searches, you can search academic papers, social networks, videos, or math problems.
  3. Build timelines: track how something’s changed over time, like ChatGPT pricing.
  4. Price comparison: Just ask “Where can I find the best price for [exact item you want]” to compare prices (another example).
  5. Track current events: get recaps of what’s happening in the U.S. Presidential race, or what happened with Hurricane Milton. Not exhaustive, but solid.
  6. Research properties: Find out who owns a building, when it was last sold, or how many houses sold in a market last month.
  7. Update your SEO: Use Perplexity’s API in your own apps, or in this example, in Google Sheets to create topical maps of keywords to include in your content.
  8. Create “GPTs” but for Perplexity: Use Collections to group related threads via custom instructions, kinda like customGPTs / Claude Projects (example).
  9. Reasoning: Pro users can use o1 with Perplexity to reason through problems—its o1, but with the internet.
  10. Recreate Google Alerts: Someone built a bot to find and send the latest news about their competitors. Fair warning, takes some coding skills to pull off!

Oh, and here’s how to make Perplexity your default browser, in case you’re interested!

What's your main use-case for Perplexity?

Web searches & fact-checking.

SEO & content research .

Current events tracking.

Financial analysis & stock info.

Price comparisons & shopping.

Haven't tried it yet, but curious.

Around the Horn.

More about it here.

  • OpenAI released a study to evaluate fairness in ChatGPT—it analyzed how GPT responds to users based on their names, and found there were occasional differences in responses—but < 1% of those reflected harmful stereotypes.
  • An investigation into CharacterAI found that users can create bots that mimic any person without their consent (and ppl have been), which is against the company’s terms of service.
  • Meta announced new open AI hardware designs at the OCP Global Summit 2024, including high-powered racks and networking systems to support NVIDIA’s new Blackwell Superchip.
