PLUS: the coding tool for non-coders

Welcome, humans.

In June, ChatGPT usage numbers went down 10%. Add in rumors that ChatGPT is getting dumber, cue the peanut gallery crowing about how AI is “over”.

It’s a useful time to step back. Let’s play a game of “Faster/Slower” to see what’s actually “over” and what’s just beginning.

Here’s what you need to know about AI today:

  • Google could be launching a world-bending new AI in December.
  • Autonomous agents are cooling off.
  • AI notches its first real-world “sporting” win against humans.
  • Want to code with AI? Here’s how.

Faster: AI Superpowers, AI at Work.

1) AI models are gonna get really good.

Y’all, the rumor mill is CRANKING right now:

  • Google could be dropping a blockbuster model named Gemini, with 5x the training as GPT-4, in Dec 2023
  • Meta could be working on Llama 3 and 4. LLama 3’s could match GPT-4 + it’d be completely free/open
  • OpenAI is now offering unlimited access to GPT-4 via ChatGPT Enterprise. The speculation? They’re done training GPT-5, so they no longer need to limit computing resources for GPT-4

These are rumors: we have no idea if they’re true. But if even one of these is accurate, we’re in for a banger of an ending to 2023.

2) You’re gonna use more AI at work.

Your boss and your boss’ boss are all talking about AI. With Google/Microsoft putting AI in your docs, slides and video calls, you’re going to be using a ton more of AI soon.

We think you’re gonna love it.

Because unlike ChatGPT, it’s AI that can read your docs, find the right details and know how your company works without you lifting a finger.

That’s the magic we were promised!

Slower: Autonomous Agents.

A few months ago, people asked, “Why just tell ChatGPT what to do? What if we let it decide?” It sorta worked, and people went nuts imagining the future.

If ChatGPT was going from a bike to a car, then these autonomous agents are like going from a car to a self-driving car.

It’s now clear we’re in very early innings with agents. Startups are shifting away from letting AI run wild. After all, Google’s been working on self-driving cars for 14 years.

Still, building autonomous agents is the ultimate engineer’s dream. While you won’t be seeing AI run your business for you anytime soon (sorry!), it’s not going to stop the builders from trying to make it happen.

Humans 1, Skynet 0
for now.

Around the Horn.

  • AI’s been beating humans at video games for decades. Now, it’s beating us in racing
drones.
  • AI21 Labs raises $155 million for their Series C at a $1.4 billion valuation.
  • Oops: Publishing house Gannett made a bet on a product called LedeAI to automate news articles. It sucked.
  • Walmart builds an internal chatbot for its employees.
  • The US extends its chip restrictions from China to the Middle East.

Treats To Try.

Lots of you want to code, and it’s easier than ever before to ship an app.

The best way to do that: We think that’s Replit and it’s AI tool Ghostwriter.

Not ChatGPT, because while ChatGPT can code, Replit also handles getting the code online for you. Which is a trickier process than you’d expect!

We’ve heard multiple stories of people launching >$1M revenue apps with basically zero coding experience.

All they had to do was ask Ghostwriter to 1) write/fix code that does X (e.g., allow people to submit cat photos) and 2) “how do I get this running”.

We curated the top 27 tools you need for work in our “Top Tools For Business”!

Thursday Trivia.

Peanut Butter & Jelly. Jordan & Pippen. Cats & AI. These duos are more than just pairing, they are cultural cornerstones.

One glance, everyone knows the rules: one is AI and one is real.

Which is which?

A/

A Cat's Commentary.

Trivia Answer: A is human-generated (from the Movie Stray) and B is AI (source)!
