šŸ˜ŗ Canvas UI shakes up ChatGPT

PLUS: Google Search is being overrun with AI images...

Welcome, humans.

Googleā€™s got a problem. It turns out, nearly all of the top image results for ā€œbaby peacockā€ are now AI-generated:

Itā€™s not just niche image searches, eitherā€”as some have pointed out, a lot of ā€œProduct X vs Vā€ results are AI-generated now, too.

In fact, even Googleā€™s AI is getting into the ā€œX vs Yā€ game, with some pretty hilarious results. Like check out what happens when you search for ā€œsauce vs dressingā€, or ā€œBreville Smart Oven Air Fryer vs the Ottoman Empire.ā€

Googleā€™s pretty savvy about shutting down viral search goofs these days, but if you search ā€œPanda Bear vs Australiaā€, you get some pretty goofy answersā€¦

Hereā€™s what you need to know about AI today:

  • We review ChatGPTā€™s new UI, Canvas.
  • TikTok announced new AI ad tool Smart+.
  • Samsungā€™s AI chip sales were so bad it had to apologize.
  • Study found ā€œAI-generatedā€ labels in headlines reduce trust.

Hereā€™s the pros and cons of using ChatGPTā€™s new UI, Canvas.

OpenAIā€™s new Canvas tool dropped last Friday, and we spent the weekend playing with it. Why? Well, we could say it's because our job is to teach you AI. But let's be realā€”we're nerds, and this is our idea of fun.

Here's what we found: The main benefit of Canvas is you can now ā€œlive editā€ your content directly in the context window. It saves your changes, and at any point, you can highlight text, hit "AskGPT," and GPT will edit for you.

An example Canvas window. NOTE: Not this actual reviewā€”just a test!

Thereā€™s also quick features at the bottom:

  • For writing: ā€œSuggest editsā€, adjust ā€œlengthā€ and ā€œreading levelā€ (from grad school to kindergarten), and ā€œadd polishā€ or ā€œEmojisā€.
  • For coding: ā€œAdd commentsā€ or ā€œLogsā€, ā€œFix bugsā€, ā€œPort to other languagesā€, and get ā€œCode Reviews.ā€ (hereā€™s a good demo video of this in action).

Suggest edits and Code Review work similarlyā€”you get about 5 comments somewhere in your text with areas to improveā€”then hit ā€œApplyā€ and GPT makes the change for you.

Example of Code review comments.

Here's a fun example of the reading level adjustment:

Grad school: ā€œCanvas represents a paradigmatic shift in digital workspaces, synthesizing creativity, collaboration, and organization into a cohesive platform.ā€

Kindergarten: ā€œCanvas is a special place where you can work and play with your ideas. It's like a big magic board where you can do lots of different things.ā€

Ahhh, to be in kindergarten againā€¦ it was a simpler time.

Canvas Pros: It's an easy way to generate drafts, and it maintains document consistency better than regular ChatGPT. Some users even think it's faster than Claude Artifacts.

Canvas Cons: For coding, the Canvas UI taps out early (~270 lines, in our experience) and you can't run code in the browser for front end testing like with Claude Artifacts. Also, it's still in Beta, so sometimes the AI switches out of Canvas mode unexpectedly.

The conclusion? Canvas IS usefulā€¦ for short, fast code reviews and one-off projects. For long-term work, you'll still want a traditional word processor or something like Cursor or Claude Projects for your code.

Have you tried Canvas? What do you think?

When you select one, you can write in additional input, FYI.

Haven't used it yet / don't have access.

Tried it briefly - still forming an opinion.

Tried it and prefer it over regular ChatGPT.

Tried it, and prefer regular ChatGPT or Claude.

Not interested at all.

Around the Horn.

  • TikTok announced a new tool called Smart+ which will use AI to build and deliver ads (similar to Meta and Googleā€™s AI advertising tools).
  • Samsung issued a rare apology after sales of its AI chips disappointed; meanwhile, chipmaker Super Microā€™s shares jumped 15% after it announced it it shipped 100K AI GPUs per quarter.
  • A new study out of the University of Zurich found that people distrust headlines labeled ā€œAI-generatedā€, and are less likely to share them.
  • Today in AI gone wildā€”This guy edited his website with an ā€œAI Onlyā€ version of the content to trick the NotebookLM hosts into believing he was responsible for the U.S. moon landing (the episode is pretty hilarious).
