Welcome, humans.
Apple Intelligence is cool, don’t get us wrong, but it’s going to take time to get useful.
Here’s a perfect example: we haven’t been able to get the notification summaries to work properly yet… Uh oh.
That said, we haven’t experienced Apple Intel on mobile yet, and we think that’s where most of the convenience and functionality is going to come from. Just make sure to always say please and thank you alongside your requests… cause ya never know.
Here’s what you need to know about AI today:
- Microsoft’s plan to build AI coders without OpenAI.
- Google Cloud saw 35% growth from AI and infrastructure.
- OpenAI began custom AI chip development with TSMC.
- LinkedIn launched an AI-powered recruitment tool.
Microsoft has a plan to build AI coders without OpenAI.
Microsoft may have just turned on OpenAI. Microsoft previously listed OpenAI as a competitor in search, but with its latest move, it’s opening up its GitHub Copilot to OpenAI’s competition.
Here’s what happened: GitHub announced that developers will be able to chat with Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Google Gemini, aka OpenAI’s competitors. First in chat, then eventually in the Copilot Assistant itself. GitHub will still keep OpenAI’s models as the default setting.
The OTHER big announcement was GitHub’s new tool that lets anyone make apps:
Right now, non-programmers can use AI to write code—we can even have the AI run the code for us—but we still have to do something with that code to use and share it.
GitHub Spark aims to simplify that process, helping anyone build, use, and share what it calls Sparks, or highly personalized micro-apps. Think Claude Artifacts, but for complete, shareable apps that anyone can actually use and install.
Here’s a cool demo of using GitHub Spark to create a travel log app:
Use GitHub Spark to create a travel log app
Our take: By integrating Claude and Gemini alongside GPT-4, Microsoft is sending a clear message to OpenAI—it’s not putting all it’s eggs in one basket anymore. This makes sense: AI coding is the first real money-maker in generative AI (just look at GitHub Copilot's $2B revenue run rate), and both Anthropic and Google know it. That's why they're fighting so hard to prove their models can code better than ChatGPT.
The real winner? Us regular folks. Competition between AI models usually leads to better products and lower prices (a “race to the bottom” at Marc Andreessen says).
If GitHub can make app creation as easy as writing a tweet, we might finally see what happens when everyone can build exactly the software they want.
